Why Should You Insure Your Home?

The homeowners insurance is meant to protect you from unprecedented losses regarding your property and its contents, claims for which qualify as defensible according to the insurance wording. Policies from different insurance companies may differ in certain minor ways. However, the terms of standard insurance do not vary from one insurance company to the other. The insurance cost may.

The ISO (Insurance Services Office) defines the terms of a standard insurance. The standard homeowners policy is a basic insurance to cover your losses that may occur due to a fire or fallen trees (in a storm, or otherwise). The standard coverage also protects you from theft. The events for which one may need additional insurance coverage for property and home may be indirectly covered, or may be requiring additional coverage, are usually natural calamities like floods, earthquakes and windstorms.

Although insuring your home does not guarantee you a full replacement of the real value of the loss, paying a little extra to the insurance company every year may increase the chances of a full recovery. In cases of owing expensive jewelry, art or other valuable assets, a regular payment to the insurance company is the norm.

Insurance is provided as a means of recovery to people with property under their names. The conditions under which you would be eligible and advised to buy a homeowners policy are:

- Residing as an individual-owner or owner-occupant(s) in the property to be insured.

- Residing as tenant in residential premises.

- Individual-owners and/or owner-occupants of a residential condominium.

The basic policies, namely the HO-2, HO-3, HO-4 and HO-6 cover you on about 15 different fronts which are not uncommon. The main reasons for a homeowners policy to be enforced are a variety of unprecedented threats, most of which may be -

- Fire/Lightning - In cases of accidental fire or damages caused by an immensely strong lighting, which is most likely to disrupting your cables and electric connections.

- Windstorm/Hail - Serious damages to your property building is possible in cases of windstorms and hail.

- A riot or civil unrest - If your property gets caught in the middle of a civil unrest causing violent damage.

- Vandalism - If your property is attacked or has been defaced by malicious mischief or violence.

- Damages caused by vehicles (including airplanes) - Damages caused by a vehicle accident (more commonly by a car or truck) are covered in the policies.

- Ice, snow, sleet - Serious damage may be caused by the weight of long standing ice or snow that has dangerously accumulated over days.

- Accident caused by a home appliance - Serious problems under the plumbing, heating, air conditioning and fire extinguisher systems may cause severe damage to the interiors of your property. Check your home insurance quotes though, sometimes, this is NOT covered.

- Electrical disturbance - A sudden accidental damage that may be the effect of a voltage fluctuation or cable complications.

Although, unlike car insurance, not owning homeowners insurance is okay by the law, a seriously caring homeowner would find it imperative.
